Golf in Cadiz

More good news for golfers was announced with the confirmation that a golf course in Prado del Rey will finally go ahead. Approval has been given for 400 properties and a 100-bed hotel with a total investment of some 120 million euros. Many other ambitious golf projects - 20 have been paralysed - in the Province of Cádiz have been sent back to the drawing board because the Junta de Andalucía doesn’t want a repeat of the Costa del Sol golf model with thousands of tons of concrete almost blocking sight of the greens. Golf courses will be allowed where they are sustainable, with perhaps a hotel complex but not with apartments and townhouses lining the fairways. Also new golf courses have to use recycled water.

The promoter of Benalup Golf and the Fair Play Hotel, Bernard Devos, says he will continue with his plans to build a golf course at Trebujena in spite of plans for 600 properties being refused. He wants to take full advantage of the unique location by building a course to rival Valderrama. For the 80,000m2 of hotel construction approved, he is now looking for international hotel groups as partners to develop this beautiful site just across the River Guadalquivir from the Natural Park of Doñana

In many ways the Costa de La Luz will benefit from mistakes made previously on its sister coast further east and maybe the Atlantic coast of pristine beaches and unspoilt countryside can be preserved a bit longer.
